Mixed in to gameplay are various legends and stories, a very cute foxes.
Battle is varied between various types of combats. As you play you unlock different weapons, abilities, and skills. Different fighting styles work against different enemies and you can be direct or play stealth. There is a good variety of options to keep things interesting.
Now, aside from fighting, there are various activities that are more calm. You have the options of sitting at viewpoints and making Haikus or visiting Hotsprings. To gain health. These counterbalance the rush of combat nicely.
There is a lot of going from place to place, but you do have a horse which is quicker. But the lands you are roaming through are beautiful. Random encounters and collectables dot the routes. The map functions well and the winds point you in the direction you need to go.
The skills and ability trees offer a great variance. You can choose different fighting stances, weapon skills, and armour. It seems like a lot at first, but being able to change stances on the fly to fight various enemies is guiding and satisfying.
If you are looking for a Call of Duty-style game, pass. This is slower, more thoughtful game. While open world, it is respectful of your time. You can do smaller missions and don’t waste your time just walking from A to B. Fast travel works well and allows fast movement around the map.
I really enjoy this game. The stories are interesting, the combat is fun and satisfying and I can play from a short 20 session or a 2 hour session and it’s just as enjoyable.
TLDR: enjoy the journey and the beauty. Go elsewhere for COD style games.
Bottom Line: a relaxed paced, thoroughly enjoyable story telling and a visual treat. Highly recommended. Just don’t forget to give the foxes belly rubs!
Took 85hrs to 100% complete the full game + DLC.
I bought first release of the game, but then Director’s Cut.
I’d definitely encourage to buy the extended version with Iki island, it’s worth your money!
